subconscious mind

In 1979, the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) program at Princeton University was set up specifically to explore the power of the subconscious mind. Their aim was to determine if human consciousness can externally affect the physical world. In 2007, PEAR closed because they’d accomplished what they had set out to do.

Programming the Subconscious Mind

What are the Possibilities?

Programming the Subconscious Mind – it may sound a little extreme, but imagine the potential!

The conscious mind can process about 40 bits of information per second; the subconscious mind can process 40 Million bits of information per second! Imagine what it’s capable of!

Of course, we constantly program our subconscious minds without realizing it. The conversations we have with ourselves and others. The information we expose ourselves to, our experiences, and our general way of thinking, all program the subconscious mind by default! The result is seen in patterns in our lives.

The Subconscious Mind Controls Vital Bodily Functions

A small example of the Power of programming the subconscious mind is this:
One of the bodily functions controlled by the subconscious is the production and absorption of HGH (human growth hormone). One of the reasons for the physical effects of ageing is a decline in the tendency of the body to produce and absorb HGH. If you could program your subconscious, you could instruct it to increase the production and absorption of your body’s own natural HGH, thus helping to diminish the effects of ageing!

Other possibilities are appetite control, building lean muscle mass, and even controlling blood sugar levels.

The Subconscious Mind Controls Habits

We all have a wide variety of habits we’re unaware of, from physical habits to emotional and mental habits, and it can take immense work, time, and will-power (not to mention therapy) to change these habits.

Even something as apparently simple as thinking positively, or feeling safe, can prove to be a major challenge. Imagine the possibilities if you could go directly to the source and program your subconscious mind!

Self-esteem and confidence, creativity, academic performance, and organizational skills could all be adjusted by the subconscious. The subconscious mind is also responsible for processing – and either hanging onto or releasing – trauma.

The Perspective of the Subconscious Mind

Here’s an analogy I believe helps to explain one of the differences in perspective between the conscious, and the subconscious minds:

When you go and see a horror movie, like “Jaws” (okay, it’s an old one, but I don’t do horror movies, and can’t think of a more recent one) your body reacts as if it’s in danger. Your heartbeat increases, your palms get sweaty, the “fight or flight” chemicals course through you.

The only thing that stops you from running screaming into the street, is your Conscious Mind. This is because your conscious mind knows it’s just a movie.

Depending on the experience and genetic programming, your subconscious is programmed to react to stimuli.

THE MAN WHO WAS SCARED OF BANANAS

I once met someone who was terrified of bananas! A grown man, who was perfectly normal in every way – a very charismatic and successful businessman – except that when he saw a banana, he broke into a cold sweat, his heart-rate increased, and he felt “fear”.

Of course, his conscious mind knew that a banana was no threat to him (thank goodness or he’s unlikely to have succeeded in business as he did if he ran screaming every time fruit salad was served at business lunches!) but his subconscious had somehow become programmed to put his body into a state of emergency when a banana was registered.

He had no idea what the connection was, and presumably, the incident that caused the connection between banana and threat was long forgotten by the conscious mind. Here’s one of the possibilities. It’s possible that, as a baby, he was either looking at or eating a banana, while daydreaming – and therefore in a very vulnerable mental state. A loud bang, or some other startling and sudden experience, happening at that moment, could have connected the object he was focusing on, and the automatic reaction caused by the sudden shock. Because our experiences are so unique, the same incident happening to another child may not have had the same effect.

This is an extreme example of course, but there are many “automatic” reactions programmed into the subconscious mind, of which the conscious mind not only has a different perspective but of which it may not even be aware.

Methods of Programming the Subconscious Mind

There are various ways you can attempt to program your subconscious. Some of these are conscious and manual, others are more automatic. In my experience, different methods work for different people – and to varying degrees. From affirmations and self-hypnosis to RDT, below are a few examples…

Affirmations

Many people choose to use affirmations because they’re easy to start using, and are of course, portable!

With affirmations, it’s essential to use the present tense. For example: “I AM happy” rather than “I will be happy”. Affirmations can take a long time. They need to be repeated many times. Then, over a long period before the message may get through to the subconscious. It’s important to keep it up, regardless of whether you’re seeing results or not. It takes determination and “stackability”, but it is worth it.

Since affirmations are dependent on the conscious mind – which will usually argue with the affirmation “No I’m not.” – the old beliefs and patterns can often block the instructions from reaching the subconscious. The affirmation has to try (by repetitive convincing) to gain permission from the “gatekeeper” – the conscious mind – in order to enter the subconscious. For this reason, it’s important to be patient, and to just keep repeating it (preferably out loud) regardless, and eventually, it will begin to sink in and take effect.

If you don’t have the patience for affirmations – or you’ve tried them as described above, and they haven’t worked for you – don’t give up, it may just be that you need a different method. Try one of those mentioned below, or do some more research to find one that suits you.

Self Hypnosis

This is a method of attempting to reach the subconscious but without the arguments of the conscious mind. With this method, the “gatekeeper” may be asleep, but the instructions still have to sneak past it without being noticed.

Subliminal Messaging

A subliminal message is a message or instruction embedded in another medium. Which is designed to pass below the normal limits of perception. These messages are unrecognizable by the conscious mind. So with this technique, the gatekeeper is out cold. It is fairly easy for instructions to sneak past without his ever knowing they were there! There is a lot of debate and disagreement as to the effectiveness of this method. There are subliminal message CDs you can buy, most of which consist of background sounds like rain or music, and have messages, instructions, and affirmations hidden in them, which are inaudible to the conscious mind.

R.D.T. (Rapid Data Transfer)

RDT is a method of reprogramming the subconscious mind by delivering millions of instructions and cues directly to the subconscious, automatically.

The person using this technology will watch an online customized theatre presentation for three minutes per module. The user chooses modules based on what they’d like to change in their life, mind, or body.

These visual and audio theatres include cues targeting the user’s subconscious mind. The subconscious mind recognizes that the theatre is specifically for that user. This is because the cues and instructions are personalized and programmed with information relating to that particular user. The “theatre” is live 24/7. It has a constant stream of instructions relating to the user’s goals and is frequently updated.

Over the next seven days (on average) the user’s brain assimilates and builds new connections corresponding to the instructions received by the subconscious mind. The best analogy of how this is possible is: You could send one hundred pages to a printer all at once. The printer stores them in memory. It then prints one page at a time, as it is able. In the same way, the brain forms new neural connections to correspond to this information, as it is able.
